Around 700 stick fighters from across the world are set to vie for supremacy in the 14th World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (WEKAF) World Championships which will fire off on July 20-24 at JCentre Mall in Mandaue City. A few names on the long list include the multi-titled squad of the United States of America (USA) who have been a dominant force in the sport winning the last four tournaments. Joining them are Turkey, Luxembourg, Chile and Vietnam. Expected to dominate the playing field are USA who have confirmed that they will be sending a total of 190 pug warriors with Hawaii accounting for 24 fighters who are National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I champions. However, the vaunted Filipino warriors will look to reclaim their long lost glory as they hope to repeat on an inspiring performance last 2012 where they pulled off a monumental upset against USA ending the six-year dynasty of the Americans.
The Filipinos struggled in the 2014 WEKAF World Championships held in Hungary as they bow out of the tournament without winning a single medal, the most lackluster performance in recent memory. Aside from the veterans, the competition will also highlight 70 young stick fighters who have been a part of the recently concluded Summer Class held a few months ago at Doce Pares International in Banilad, Cebu.
